In the first week of our communication design classes, I learned about the basic intricacies of communication design. Communication design is the primary and basic mode of communicating ideas, designs, notions and trends. It’s everywhere in the world, on billboards, in the apps on our phones, in malls, on the streets, everywhere. Communication design is a sender and receiver type of relationship wherein designers express their ideas, motives and intentions via their designs. Our five senses, listening, seeing, touching, speaking, and smelling are all primary modes of communication that help designers further build their designs based on these aspects.
In this class, we got to learn about how we can ideate certain designs and ideas. We started with one word and then branched out into deciphering what that word can mean to us. The word we were assigned was
“Leonardo Da Vinci”. What I noticed was that different words can trigger different emotions and ideas in our heads. I thought about “anatomy” when I heard his name, whereas other thought of painting, language, fashion, etc.
This exercise also taught me how design can be relative to its perceiver. Some may think of the word “listen” and think about music, whereas another person may think about their mother’s voice. As designers it is our job to instil emotions, thoughts and ideas into the user’s heads in order for them to resonate and engage with out designs.
