In the twelfth week of drawing, I got to experiment and get better at my character design skills. I went on to creating realistic as well as made up characters like winged aliens and unicorn-humans. This exercise expanded my creativity as an artist and not only was it fun to conduct, but was also useful for my zine as I got to creating many more characters for my zine. I learned how to realistically render characters, even the made up ones and somehow make them look realistic despite the fact that they aren’t real.
I went on to planning my zine later on and developed 3D versions of the first four pages:
The fairytales I plan on exploring are, The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, Alice in Wonderland, Jack and the Bean Stalk and Neverland, so five stories in total, with poetry.
Although it was challenging and frustrating to make 3D depictions for my zine, I think after several different tries, it worked out pretty well. After taking reference of several books on pop up cards and youtube tutorials on pop up books, I got to learn about the several different types of cuts and folds artists use to create pop up books. The first fold I tried was the V cut. This fold required me to cut a line in the middle of the folded card, which made the paper protrude. Like this:

However, the V cut fold, didn’t look neat enough, and made the paper, when folded, look untidy because of the cuts. So then I decided to use the v fold, which required me to use a separate sheet of paper in order to create a 3D effect, which you will be able to see in the first four pages of my zine.
