We started of the second week of classes by watching a movie. The movie Amélie was interesting for me to watch, as I had never seen a movie like that before. It was in another language, French, and it centered around an introverted character, which we don’t really see much of in modern day cinema. This brought up a completely new perspective for me, because as an introverted person myself, I could resonate with some of Amelie’s qualities.
According to me the movie Amélie conveys themes of loneliness and isolation, as well as misunderstanding. Growing up an only child to parents who wouldn’t pay much heed to her, Amélie turned her loneliness into an art form, becoming a secluded personality, and co-oping with her loneliness by learning how to be okay with it. Furthermore, the movie also touches upon the theme of misunderstanding. A lot of people throughout the movie think that Amélie chooses not to be around people, but in actuality, she longs for human connection like any other person. We learn of this revelational information when we realise Amélie’s good nature for helping the people around her, despite not knowing them at all. To depict a mental picture of this feeling and her personality, these were the pictures that I took to decribe her.
I peeled out an orange and displayed it on a white piece of cloth to symbolise Amélie’s emptiness and loneliness and how sometimes, she can also feel like she has nobody to vent to or offer to anyone at the end of the day. I also used the orange peel as a way to symbolise the layers that she puts up to stop people fro getting to know her. Furthermore, in the second picture I also represented her as an outsider by making her the only apple in the middle, surrounded by a bunch of oranges. This shows, that despite her being the fruit (human) just like the others, she still feels like she doesn’t fit in.
My favorite character in the movie: A character analysis
Dufayel, to me, is one of the most interesting characters in the movie Amélie. Like Amélie, Dufayel, is antisocial, but his reasons are more physical when compared to Amélie’s emotional ones. Unlike Amélie’s restless need and longing for human connection, Dufayel doesn’t crave that, and is okay with being secluded. We see his disinterestedness in human connection and the world, through his paintings, beacuse he keeps repainting the same things again and again. Dufayel also learns how to live vicariously thorugh other people’s experiences and lives. We also understand, how despite his antisocial behaviour, he still longs for human connection deep down.
