In the first week of studio, after the holidays, we had a refreshing start. We got to work on expression through dramatics as well as verbal. As designers, it’s important for us to express ourselves, in words that don’t limit us and in expressions, too.
We were given a list of words, some I had known of, some I hadn’t, and then were told to find out their synomyns and create a small act to describe the words.
This excercise was not only fun and entertaining, but also quite educational, because it taught me several new words and increased my vocabulary in a fun way, unknowingly. I began using these words more in my daily life.
We were also told to make sentences using those words and then create the dramatic act. These were the sentences I create on our group’s word “Despicable”:
- The thief flashed a despicable (beastly) grin before snatching the purse from the old woman’s hand.
- Everyone disliked Emma because of her despicable (detestable) attitude towards everyone she came across.
- The contemptible man kept taking advantage of his rich and loyal friends.
- The woman gave a vile look to the shopkeeper when he did not appease to her bargain.
I think, as a designer, it’s important to express your work and whatever it is that you make in precise and meaningful words, giving the audience as much information as possible. This excercise helped me realise that what we say about our work and how we justify it is equally as important as what we make.
