In the first week of our new semester, I got to learn about the famous director, Wes Anderson. He directs his movies in a very aesthetically pleasing manner with emphasis on visual styling. Anderson does so by incorporating elements such as symmetrical framing, bold and striking colours and combining these colours together effectively to create contrast and make the picture pop out. In this lecture, I learned how to effectively grasp the attention of your audience by manipulating the composition of your artworks and using these methods to do so.

I decided to incorporate these qualities and use this knowledge to create a poster which revolves around the idea of spring and vibrance. I wanted to make it as colourful as possible to evoke a feeling of it being springtime. The central theme of the poster was about an upcoming movie called Miss Americana on Netflix which revolves around the famous singer Taylor Swift’s most recent album called “Lover”. I decided to use the colour palette of her new album and make this poster based on her upcoming Netflix documentary. I used several similar elements that Wes Anderson uses, such as symmetrical framing by using photoshop’s brush tool to create the leafy frame for the poster. And I also used a vibrant colour palette to denote to the theme of springtime. To make the poster pop more, I used the complementary colours, yellow and purple in the fur jacket and dress, in order to make the woman the center and focal point of the poster.
I used the pen tool to create basic outlines for the poster, filling them in with colour, and then went on to creating details with the brush tool, such as the nose, the creases in the fur jacket, indentations in the hands, etc.
Overall, this activity help me gauge a better understanding on how digital artists create appealing and attractive work through the different tones, themes, colours, symmetry and several other elements. It will be really helpful and effective to keep these aspects in the back of my mind while making any of my artwork.
