History, as a subject, is relevant for us to study, because it defines who we are and where we come from. It’s a way for us to reflect upon cultures, and civilisations and foregone eras and events that have shaped the world into what it is today. As a designer, I think its important to know this, because artworks, ideas and way of thinking have also changed overtime, and history gives us an insight into how these aspects have shaped the contemporary art world, too.
In this lesson, I got to learn about the Stone Age. The stone age, was an era wherein people used primitive stone tools, along with other natural resources such as wood and bones in order to make weapons and tools. This age began around 2.5 million years ago and lasted till 3,300 B.C. I also learned that the stone age can be divided into three different ages, one of them being the Neolithic period, the other two being the Paleolithic Period and Mesolithic Period. I also learned how back in the Stone Age, humans used to excarnate and then bury their corpses for nobility purposes.
The art in the Stone age was female centric, as the females were considered to be holy and divine. People then used to carve human figures into ivory to depict art. This continued on to humans carving symbols and art using stones. By using such symbols, the humans imparted stories and tales.
Furthermore, I also learned about the Catal Huyok settlement and the Jericho settlement, which was the very first settlement ever to exist, with Ail Ghazal along with Sumer, known as the earliest civilization.
These historic facts tell us a lot about the lifestyles that the people led in the Stone Age, and how much people have evolved, since.
