In the final week of this semester, we got to reflect on our learnings and what this project taught us and how it helped us in the long term. I got to reflect on what “Parts of a Whole” refers to. It means considering an element and breaking it down further into an array of more elements in order to gauge an understanding of what exactly makes it complete. “Part” here refers to the aspects that come within a discipline. And “Whole” refers to the discipline entirely. All of these elements play a crucial role and an integral part in making the discipline more diverse and multi-faceted.For example, when looking at our mind maps which we created, it is important to gain a holistic understanding of what a discipline has to offer. When researching this, one can understand how a discipline can branch out further into several categories, like for example “Communication Design” is a broad field, it consists of plenty of different elements such as Graphic design, logo design, packaging, etc. Therefore, limiting it to one broad aspect doesn’t do it justice and often creates misconceptions about what the stream actually is. By writing this essay and conducting research for it, my perspective on book cover designing broadened, giving me a more holistic understanding of communication design and design as a whole.
An overview of my essay format:
Exploring our desired streams helped me understand design as a visual concept. When I dove into understanding communication design, I got to researching and then learning about what it is that I want to pursue. This project helped me do that in the best way possible, because not only did I get the chance to write an essay by researching about this discipline but I also got the chance to get a hands on experience. i found myself getting engrossed and consumed by this project as it guided me through the labyrinth of pathways that was the stream of communication design. This project also got me to understanding how design plays a massive role in every industry. It communicates ideas, creates an interaction with the outside world and enhances people’s perspective on an aspect that otherwise could not have been expressed verbally, in written form or any other mode of communication. Design is multifarious and has a lot to offer other than just what you may be able to notice from its surface.
