In the seventh week of our classes we began collecting and researching secondary sources, given that we had accumulated our primary resources already and gone door to door in our discussed localities to gather this information. As researchers, I learned that it was extremely important for us to refer to published articles that have taken an initiative experimented with similar findings and focuses as us. This can be important because it gives our research a backbone and a strong sense of understanding and clarification. It allows us to be sure about the facts we gather and the initiatives we make. As we went about researching, we found an article talking about an initiative taken in Germany where the researcher researched about the reasoning behind certain bakeries indulging in the wastage of food. They then came up with five concepts and ways to reduce this. Below is the abstract of this article titled “A Participatory Approach to Minimizing Food Waste in the Food Industry — A Manual for Managers”.

Through this research study, we got to understanding ways in which the article suggested people could reduce the amount of waste in restaurants and also talked about the reasoning behind the heavy food wastage in the food industry. (overestimation, cost effectivity, etc). This inspired us to research Kamala Mills. We discussed how the maximum amount of food wasted in Mumbai is from the hospitality sector, mostly restaurants. Kamala Mills, the food hub of Bombay has over 20 restaurants packed together making it a popular dining site. The amount of food wasted in the production as well as consumption rates are high due to the large crowd that this place attracts. We hence decided to research this topic and conclude our findings on it.
