In this week of our seminar class, I finally got to finalise my inquiry questions and choose one of them to conduct my literary essay exploring the stream of communication design through book cover illustrations. The questions are as listed below:
Could abstract symbolisms on book cover designs evoke emotions in the audience?
Could the use of colours in the illustrations enhance the interpretation of a book?
Would book cover designs be more constructive if the visual hierarchy of the cover is portrayed in a better abstract manner?
Should illustrations be preferred more in interpretation of book covers?
In the larger domain of design, I got to understanding the discipline we’re interested in and want to pursue and also got to understanding this as a whole by discovering and researching a particular category or part under the discipline. I began understanding this category by exploring the elements and figuring out the outcomes and possibilities by weighing out and estimating these outcomes in order to better understand my stream.
This organiser helped me substantiate and validate the knowledge and potential of the inquiry questions. I assimilated the information to the point where I could justify the inquiry question in order to write the final paper. As I began filling in my organiser, I understood the main premise behind the exercise which was to break down crucial elements and understand what we are researching ourselves. This helped me look at my disciplines and the parts that come under it more holistically but also allowed me to conduct an in depth analysis which challenged me to question what exactly my discipline enables me to focus on.
Furthermore, I got to read multiple papers revolving around the topic of communication design which was shared with us in class. After reading these essays I got more familiar with the writing styles and methods writers use in order to write a cohesive essay.
The question I chose to finalise my essay on was “Could the use of colours in the illustrations enhance the interpretation of a book?”.
